Botox vs Dysport: FAQ’s

What are They and How are They Different?
Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) carefully injected by our specialists in our non-surgical medical spa to soften unwanted lines and wrinkles. Botox was the 1st to be FDA approved in 2002; Dysport was approved in 2009. While Botox and Dysport contain the same active ingredient, they have different manufacturers, slightly different formulations, and different dilutions that result in subtle variations in how they may feel. Botox is more concentrated and it does not spread as far to other muscles, making it ideal for some areas of the face. Because it takes more Dysport to achieve the same result as Botox, they cannot be compared unit to unit, however the cost per area is usually the same, or very similar.
What do They Treat?
Both Botox and Dysport are FDA approved to treat glabellar lines, commonly referred to as frown lines, or the “11’s”. Botox is also FDA approved to soften unwanted forehead and smile lines around the eyes, referred to as the “crow’s feet.” In addition, Botox and Dysport are frequently used to further balance and rejuvenate your face by softening “bunny” or “wolf” lines on the sides of the nose, dimpling of the chin, a gummy smile, downturned corners of the mouth, to relieve headaches, clenching and grinding of your teeth, and TMJ symptoms.
What to Expect with Your Treatment?
With little to no downtime, you can expect your Botox or Dysport appointment to take approximately 30 minutes and most people resume their daily routine or return to work. To reduce the risk of side effects your specialist will simply educate you on a few restrictions for the first 48 hours that include being careful not to rub or massage the treated areas and to avoid strenuous activity.
Are You a Candidate?
You are in luck! Most men and women are excellent candidates for Botox or Dysport, however there are a few exceptions. If you have a milk allergy you are not a candidate to receive Dysport, however you can safely receive Botox. If you have a neurological disorder our providers will discuss your history with you at length to ensure there are no contraindications before proceeding.
