Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a procedure performed to correct ears that are sticking out from the side of the face or are overly large. Many people feel self-conscious about their protruding ears and it can make them a target of teasing by their peers, particularly in kids. Otoplasty is performed through incisions hidden in the natural folds of the ears to eliminate or minimize any visible scars. Cartilage in the ear may then be removed or reshaped to create the desired results.
Otoplasty can be performed on children as young as 5 or 6 as that is typically the age by which most have at least 90% of their adult ear growth.
