Anya’s Journey

Two years into my transition, I was feeling more and more like my face didn’t match the person I really was. People were concerned about approaching me, either because of unfamiliarity with transgenders or fear that they might say something wrong. Everywhere I went I felt like I somehow drew attention, no matter how quiet my mood.

When I finally gained the courage to consider facial feminization surgery, I knew that choosing the right provider was much more important than knowing what procedures I wanted. I researched and found Dr. Bryan Rolfes at Omni Cosmetic in Wayzata, MN. During my consultation with Dr. Rolfes, we spent quite a while discussing his experience and how the various procedures may or may not suit me. His staff was extremely friendly and was able to answer all my questions (even after my initial consultation) while I was considering my options. I actually made a second in-office consultation appointment with Dr. Rolfes, and he was just as patient and thorough throughout our conversation. He was enthusiastic about several options and the potential outcome for me but, did not pressure me in any way. After all that, I was ready to confidently commit to surgery and we set a date!

My family and I were greeted warmly the morning we came in for my procedure. The nurse that met us was so friendly it almost felt like we were with a family friend. My mom mentioned how grateful she was for this nurse because she really helped ease her anxiety and prepare for my recovery.

The healing process for me was certainly not without pain, and I am a bit “faint of heart” when it comes to pain killers, blood and my psyche. Despite my panicked voice rambling on the phone, my nurse from Omni Cosmetic was extremely easy to communicate with and compassionate every time I had a question. Whether I needed reassurance of my progress or was worried about my pain, Mickie or Dr. Rolfes were always there to reassure me and provide an answer. I had a minor complication of swelling in my jaw that required drainage and was quickly brought in to see Dr. Rolfes where the issue was dealt with immediately.

Within two weeks I was moving around pretty normally but still wore bandages over my incisions and had some residual swelling in my eyes and chin however, I never felt more confident in my life! Now that my swelling has completely subsided, I really do look like a female version of the person I came in as. I can now look at myself in the mirror and feel confidence and gratitude. After years of avoiding my own reflection, I will never take this for granted. I love that my family and friends recognize me on the street after the procedure, so I know the changes are subtle for me to unmistakably be me! The results Dr. Rolfes achieved are far better than I ever could have imagined. I have a newfound confidence and peace in my life and I no longer have to worry about what people think (or fear) when they see me. My career, personal life, relationships all have been strengthened from this surgery.

I would highly recommend Dr. Rolfes for any facial feminization procedure and I hope that his future patients experience the relief and strength I have for investing in my own happiness.
