Dermal Fillers (Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC)
Currently, Juvederm is the most popular dermal filler used by plastic surgeons for lip enlargement. Juvederm is made from hyaluronic acid, and creates a soft, malleable look and feel that mimics the natural collagen tissue of the lips. The newest generation of Juvederm has Xylocaine in it which is an effective numbing agent. This makes the placement of the product more comfortable.
Dermal fillers are temporary treatments that typically last 4-7 months although some patients results can last up to a year with the newest generation of fillers. They require minimal or no downtime and results are enjoyed immediately. These treatments are performed in an office setting in our Minneapolis and St. Paul offices.
Fat Grafting
Dr. Rolfes and Dr. Bichanich are able to transfer fat to the lip that is harvested from another area of the body. This is accomplished either through fat injections or fat graft. The fat collected for fat injections is usually gathered during a liposuction procedure and is placed into a centrifuge that separates the fat cells from the liquids and fatty acids. This process takes a bit more time but often results in a longer-lasting effect. Because the fat cells are essentially a transplant – when they “take” they are indefinite.
Fat grafts and fat injections are semi-permanent, as the body tends to absorb fatty tissue in a way that cannot be predicted. Follow-up treatments may be necessary to attain the desired outcome.
