Our Origin Story

In plastic surgery, we sometimes use the phrase, “looking through the retrospecto-scope.” Therefore, for those who like a little bit of history, it might be helpful (or somewhat interesting) to understand the origin story of Omni Cosmetic and to see how a very distinct pathway for success was found in a large continent of choices.

The backstory is this: A small-town kid makes it to the big city and then begins a cross country journey that included a year in Australia, 6 years in Chicago, 3 years in California, and even a stint in Alaska to arrive back home in Minnesota. In many ways, it has always been a tale of two cities.  The pull and excitement of a big city like Minneapolis, Minnesota vs the comfort and familiarity of a smaller city like St. Cloud, Minnesota.  When one of Minnesota’s native sons, Dr. John Allan Ness was deciding where to set up his plastic surgery practice, he knew his calling might be a return to Minnesota.  At the time of his decision, it was difficult to turn down a highly competitive and coveted, faculty position at the University of California that he had been offered. However, after 13 years of school and training after college and 14 moves that included marriage and two children, he realized that being close to his extended family was a priority as he wanted his children to have a small-town experience attending a public school that was formative in his own life.

In 1998, Dr. Ness began his plastic surgery career in St. Cloud, Minnesota, but he soon was recruited to work at the University of Minnesota and then at a new cosmetic surgery clinic in Edina, Minnesota.  His children started elementary school and he began building his plastic surgery practice in St. Cloud and in Minneapolis.  Initially, he spent a day a month in Minneapolis, and that eventually increased to one day a week.  More and more patients sought his expertise by driving to see him in St. Cloud for a plastic surgery consultation and they kept asking him why he didn’t have a cosmetic surgery office in the Twin Cities.  In 2009, Dr. Ness finally made the move to Wayzata, Minnesota and in 2011 Ness Plastic Surgery was created.  Who starts a new cosmetic surgery practice in the middle of a Great Recession?  Dr. Ness of course.

His practice flourished and he realized that he needed help.  Although he started with 1.5 employees, his practice soon employed and attracted over 15 top tier employees.  He found a compatible partner when St. Paul Minnesota’s native son Dr. Bryan Rolfes also wanted to create a home and cosmetic plastic surgery practice in Wayzata, Minnesota.  They worked side by side for two years and in 2019 they officially became partners.  Dr. Rolfes was reluctant to change his last name to Ness, so therefore they changed the name of the business and together they launched Omni Cosmetic as a joint effort to bring a fresh face to the plastic and cosmetic surgery scene in Minnesota.  They now employ over 25 people that have made Omni Cosmetic a joy-filled place for many patients to call their home.

In 2019, they completed an expansion of the Omni Cosmetic medical spa and surgical practice into (you guessed it) St. Cloud, Minnesota! They now have two full-time locations and 6 non-surgical specialists. The foundation for their practice was built on cosmetic improvements through both non-surgical and surgical treatment options. They continue to believe that together they can help everyone who seeks their consultation to discover and reveal their individual inner beauty.
